easyJet: 1.4 million fewer seats
According to the Financial Times, as published by The Irish Times on 8 October, easyJet is removing a further 600,000 to 700,000 seats from its winter schedule, which runs from October to the end of March, after a cut of a similar size earlier this year. That is about two days of flying in a winter programme of around 50 million seats. Its chief executive said the airline wants to buy less fuel, the price of which has risen sharply since the conflict with Iran began in February.
The Connexion reports that flights to and from France are affected, but no list of routes has been published. easyJet told Sky News that the changes are a tiny proportion of its flying programme and that it mainly targets routes with several flights a day, so passengers can be moved to another flight on the same day.
Ryanair: quieter days and its Belgian network
Ryanair, for its part, is cancelling some Tuesday and Wednesday flights and some quieter weekend services over the winter, The Irish Times reported. Its chief executive expects fuel to remain expensive for around another 18 months.
In Belgium, the airline announced on 20 October that it is dropping 20 routes from Brussels and Charleroi, about 1.1 million seats, blaming the rise in Belgium's departure tax in January 2027, Air Journal reported. For France, the Charleroi to Nimes route is suspended from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027, according to the director of Nimes airport quoted by Sudinfo; two weekly flights are due to return in April.
Cancelled flight: what the airline owes you
If you are told about the cancellation more than 14 days before departure, the airline must offer you another flight or a refund, but fixed compensation is not due. If it is announced less than 14 days before departure, compensation of €250, €400 or €600 depending on distance is in principle due, unless you are rerouted at times close to the original ones. A schedule cut made for cost reasons is not, in principle, an extraordinary circumstance.
If your new departure time is very different or you are moved to another airport, keep every email from the airline and your receipts for any extra costs.
