What has been announced for 30 October
According to Travel Quotidiano, the Unione sindacale di base (USB) has called a national general strike for Friday 30 October, from midnight to 11.59pm, across the public and private sectors. On the railways, action starts on Thursday 29 October at 9pm and runs until 8.59pm on Friday.
In Pisa and Florence, a separate 24-hour strike is also planned on 30 October for employees of Toscana Aeroporti, which runs both airports, and of the companies GH Toscana and Consulta, called by USB Lavoro Privato, according to Virgilio Notizie and Travel Quotidiano.
Why the impact on flights is still unclear
ENAC, Italy's civil aviation authority, sets aside 30 October to 5 November as a strike-free period during which air transport strikes are not allowed. Travel Quotidiano reports that the strike guarantee commission reminded USB of this rule on 13 October and asked it to exclude transport from the action. The union has kept its position and disputes these limits.
LentePubblica therefore says a general halt to flights cannot be confirmed from the proclamations alone. When aviation strikes do go ahead, Italian law protects two time windows, 7am to 10am and 6pm to 9pm, and ENAC publishes a list of guaranteed flights. As of 26 October, none of the sources we checked reported cancellations announced by airlines.
Further strike notices target Italian aviation in November, notably on 6, 21 and 22 November, after the strike-free period ends.
What to do if you are flying to Italy on 30 October
Check your flight status the day before and on the morning of departure, especially for Pisa and Florence, and watch for messages from your airline. If you are travelling to the airport by train, allow for the rail strike. Keep your boarding passes and receipts for meals or hotels.
A strike by airport staff is usually an extraordinary circumstance that can rule out compensation. The airline must still offer a refund or rerouting, plus care while you wait. If the strike is not the real cause of the delay or cancellation, compensation of 250, 400 or 600 € may still be due: each case is assessed on its facts.
Frequently asked questions
Will Paris to Florence or Pisa flights on 30 October be cancelled?
Not necessarily. A 24-hour strike is planned at both airports, but ENAC's strike-free period starts the same day. No cancellations had been announced as of 26 October according to the sources we checked.
Can I get compensation if this strike cancels my flight?
Usually not if the airport staff strike is the real cause, but a refund or rerouting and care are still owed. VolClaim checks your eligibility for free.
