French pilot and cabin crew strike of 17–21 October: notice suspended

Published · VolClaim

The French flight crew union coalition (SNPL, SNPNC-FO, UNSA PNC, SNGAF and UNAC) has suspended the national strike notice that covered Saturday 17 to Wednesday 21 October 2026, the start of the French autumn school holidays. The unions warn, however, that industrial action has not been ruled out for good.

What the strike notice covered

Filed in mid-September, the notice ran for five days, from 00:01 on 17 October to 23:59 on 21 October, Paris time. According to Air Journal, it covered pilots and cabin crew of airlines subject to French labour law, on the flights they operate under that framework.

The unions opposed a reform of the rules on combining work and a pension, due to take effect on 1 January 2027. They wanted flight crew and their supplementary pension fund, the CRPN, excluded from it, fearing lower pensions. Trade press named Air France, Transavia France, Volotea and Corsair among the most exposed airlines.

Why it was suspended

According to TourMaG, the suspension was announced late on Friday 9 October, after several government commitments: a new ministerial circular addressed to the head of the national pension fund CNAV, a rule limiting pension reductions until the basic pension is drawn, a resolution by the CRPN board and a decree described as imminent.

DéplacementsPros reports that the SNPNC union confirmed the suspension on its website, stressing that it was not a blank cheque. As of 12 October, the promised decree had not yet been published in the French official journal, and the unions kept open the option of filing a new notice if the commitments are not met.

What it means for travellers

With the notice suspended, airlines had no reduced schedule to apply for this action. Before the suspension, TRAVEL Extra noted that no airline had published a detailed cancellation list.

If you are travelling during the holidays, still check your flight status with the airline the day before and on the day of departure, and keep your boarding passes and receipts for any meals or hotel costs if you are kept waiting. We will update this article if a new strike notice is announced.

Strikes and compensation: what to know

Whatever the cause of a cancellation or long delay, care (meals, a hotel if needed) and the choice between a refund and re-routing remain due. Fixed compensation of €250 to €600, on the other hand, depends on the type of strike.

In its judgment of 23 March 2021 (case C-28/20), the Court of Justice of the European Union held that a strike by the airline's own staff is not an extraordinary circumstance. It made an exception for strikes outside the airline, such as air traffic controller strikes, and for demands that only public authorities can meet, which could have been argued here since the action targeted a government reform. Each case is therefore assessed on its own facts.

Frequently asked questions

Is the French flight crew strike of 17–21 October 2026 going ahead?

No. The unions suspended the notice on 9 October and have not ruled out new action if the government does not keep its commitments.

My flight was cancelled because of a strike: am I entitled to compensation?

It depends on who is striking and why. Care and a refund or re-routing are always due; fixed compensation is due in particular when the airline's own staff strike. VolClaim checks your case for free.
