KLM cancels flights from 26 October 2026 to early March 2027: what we know

Published · VolClaim

Dutch airline KLM will cancel part of its schedule between 26 October 2026 and early March 2027, as several of its aircraft are grounded for longer than planned. Passengers flying from France via Amsterdam Schiphol may be affected, especially on long-haul connections.

Why KLM is cutting its schedule

According to a spokesperson quoted by Dutch public broadcaster NOS and reported by DutchReview, more aircraft than usual are temporarily out of service because of unplanned maintenance, damage repairs and work taking longer than expected. IamExpat also mentions delays in obtaining spare parts.

By removing some flights in advance, KLM wants to keep more long-haul aircraft available as backups and make the rest of its schedule more reliable. In the week before the announcement, at least five intercontinental routes had already been cancelled at short notice for technical reasons, according to NU.nl as cited by DutchReview.

Which flights are affected?

So far, KLM has given neither the number of cancelled flights nor the list of affected destinations. The airline says it is prioritising flights where cancellation has the least impact and where it can re-route the most passengers. Some flights are also being operated with a different aircraft than planned.

The period covers the Christmas and New Year holidays and the February school break. According to IamExpat, affected passengers are usually re-booked automatically and can check the alternatives offered in KLM's My Trip area. We will update this article as soon as specific routes are known.

Cancellation for technical reasons: your rights

The notice period is decisive. A cancellation announced less than 14 days before departure in principle gives a right to the fixed compensation set by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, namely €250, €400 or €600 depending on distance, unless the airline offers re-routing at times very close to the original ones. If announced earlier, it gives a right to a refund or another flight, but not to fixed compensation.

Technical problems are in principle part of an airline's normal activity. Since the Wallentin-Hermann judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union (case C-549/07, 22 December 2008), a fault found during maintenance or caused by poor maintenance is not, on its own, an extraordinary circumstance that rules out compensation.

As KLM is a European airline, these rules apply to its flights departing from the European Union as well as to those arriving there. In every case, care remains due while you wait: meals and refreshments, and a hotel if an overnight stay becomes necessary.
