Three weeks with no take-offs or landings
In a press release issued on 21 July, Timișoara Traian Vuia airport said its runway would be completely closed from 08:00 on 2 November to 21:00 on 22 November, local time, for repair work it describes as essential for operational safety. All take-offs and landings are suspended for the period. The airport says airlines were informed so they could adjust their schedules, and asks passengers to contact the airline they booked with.
Wizz Air moves to Arad, Paris route suspended
Wizz Air, the airport's main carrier, announced on 15 October that it would temporarily move most of its flights to Arad International Airport, Antena 3 CNN and HotNews.ro reported. On 2 November, flights to Dortmund and Memmingen will still leave Timișoara before 08:00, but their return legs will land in Arad. On 22 November, only flights from Rome Fiumicino and Bari will land in Timișoara; the airline's other flights that day stay in Arad.
According to G4Media, in an article updated on 28 October, Wizz Air flights to Paris, Madrid and Valencia will not operate from Arad, while around ten other destinations continue. Lufthansa is suspending its Munich-Timișoara flights from 2 to 22 November, according to its travel-agent information site, and G4Media says Turkish Airlines is also suspending its Istanbul route. Tarom and HiSky link Arad with Bucharest during the works. No shuttle is planned between the two airports: G4Media reports that passengers must arrange their own transport.
What to check and your rights
Wizz Air says affected passengers have been informed and sent a new schedule. If you booked through a travel agent or an online travel site, changes are handled by that seller. Check the departure and arrival airport shown on your booking: Antena 3 CNN warns passengers not to head to Timișoara by default.
If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer a refund or rerouting. A cancellation announced at least 14 days before departure does not, as a rule, give a right to compensation of 250, 400 or 600 euros under EU261, and a closure ordered by the airport for works also weighs in the assessment. A late cancellation notice, or an arrival delay of 3 hours or more unrelated to the works, has to be assessed case by case.
