Which flights are covered when departing from a French airport?

The point of departure determines almost everything. A flight that takes off from an airport in the European Union (CDG, Orly, Lyon, Marseille, Nice or any other European airport) is covered by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, whether the airline is European, American, Asian or from the Gulf.

For a flight arriving in Europe from a non-EU country, the rule is different: it is only covered if the airline operating it is an EU airline. A New York – Paris flight operated by Air France is covered; the same route operated by an American airline is not.

Amount of compensation

• €250 for a flight of 1,500 km or less (for example Paris – Barcelona);
• €400 for an intra-EU flight over 1,500 km, or another flight of 1,500 to 3,500 km (for example Paris – Athens or Lyon – Marrakech);
• €600 beyond 3,500 km outside the European Union (for example Paris – Montreal); this amount may be reduced by half if the delay on arrival is between 3 and 4 hours.

These amounts are owed for a delay of 3 hours or more on arrival, a cancellation notified less than 14 days before departure or denied boarding, unless an extraordinary circumstance applies.
